Students’ Perception about the Effects of Teaching Arabic Language Proficiency Using Student-Centered Teaching Approach Combined with Coaching and Mentoring Elements

Abstract

Pendekatan pengajaran pensyarah menjadi wasilah kepada penyampaian ilmu dan kemahiran kepada pelajar. Setiap pendekatan pengajaran mempunyai kesan yang tersendiri terhadap diri para pelajar. Kajian tinjauan ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti persepsi pelajar tentang kesan pendekatan pengajaran berpusatkan pelajar berserta elemen coaching dan mentoring dari sudut kesanggupan berkomunikasi, kebimbangan berbahasa, keyakinan linguistik, kecekapan bertutur dan penampilan antarabangsa. Seramai 21 orang pelajar kursus PPPJ3503 Bahasa Arab Lisan terlibat sebagai peserta kajian ini. Pada akhir semester, borang soal selidik diedarkan kepada para peserta kajian dan temu bual kumpulan fokus juga dilaksanakan. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa semua peserta kajian bersetuju bahawa telah berlaku peningkatan dalam diri masing-masing dari sudut kesanggupan berkomunikasi, pengurangan kebimbangan berbahasa, keyakinan linguistik, kecekapan bertutur dan penampilan antarabangsa. Cara peningkatan diri pelajar dari sudut kesanggupan berkomunikasi, kebimbangan berbahasa, keyakinan linguistik, kecekapan bertutur dan penampilan antarabangsa juga dibincangkan. Penemuan kajian ini memberikan maklumat tentang persepsi pelajar terhadap kesan pendekatan pengajaran ini penting sebagai panduan kepada para pensyarah untuk mempertimbangkan pendekatan pengajaran ini sebagai salah satu daripada pendekatan pengajaran yang boleh digunakan dalam proses pengajaran kemahiran bertutur bahasa Arab.

The lecturer’s teaching approach becomes Arab part of the delivery of knowledge and skills to students. Each teaching approach has its own impact on the students. This survey study aimed to identify the students ' perceptions about the effect of student- centered teaching approaches with the elements of coaching and mentoring from the point of willingness to communicate, speaking anxiety, linguistic confidence, efficiency speaking and international appearance. A total of 21 PPPJ3503 Arabic Language Oral course’s students were involved as participant in this study. At the end of the semester, a questionnaire was distributed to all participants and focus group interview was also performed. The findings showed that all the participants of the study agreed that the increase in the individual’s ability occurred respectively in terms of willingness to communicate, speaking anxiety reduction, linguistic confidence, efficiency and international appearances. How to increase students ' willingness to communicate, from the point of speaking anxiety, linguistic confidence, efficiency and international speaking appearances are also discussed. The findings of this study provide information on students ' perception of the impact of this important approach to teaching as a guide to the lecturers to consider this teaching approach as one of the teaching approach can be used in the process of teaching Arabic speaking skills.
